While Retin-A was being prescribed since 1971 to treat acne and topical
Tretinoin was approved the same year, Renova gained approval from the
FDA in 1996 for the treatment of sun-related problems. The active
metabolite in Renova and Retin-A is Tretinoin, which is related to
Vitamin A, the vitamin that enriches skin elasticity and texture. While
dead cells in the skin are being shed, Tretinoin stimulates the growth
of new cells. Dermatologists soon discovered that the combination of

Before you start using Renova-Retin A cream, inform your dermatologist
of your medical history, and all the medications [including nutritional
supplements and herbal products] you are taking, as an overdose of
Vitamin A can work against you. Let the doctor know if you have ever
had eczema, or any allergy [especially to Vitamin A or any other
medicine/food/dyes/preservatives], or if your skin is sensitive to
sunlight. As using this cream can increase your sensitivity to the sun,
wind or cold, it is recommended that you avoid being out in the sun, or
wear protective clothing [including a hat], or use a sunscreen, and
avoid prolonged exposure to extreme conditions of the weather. Pregnant
or lactating women should not use this cream without the advice of
their doctor.
The cream should be applied each night, preferably; after you have
washed your face thoroughly, patted it dry, and waited for about 20
minutes or so, before applying a tiny drop of the cream evenly all over
your face. Be careful and avoid touching your eyes, nostrils, mouth, or
any open wound with this cream, or it will hurt very badly. In case you
do make such contact, wash your hands thoroughly with soap and then
wash the affected area properly. Do not apply more than once a day, or
huge amounts of the cream, for an over-application will lead to
over-dryness and irritation of the skin. If your skin becomes too dry,
you can ask the dermatologist to recommend another gel along-with
Tretinoin. If you forget to make an application one day, follow the
regular schedule the next day; but, if you have been instructed to use
it once in 2/3 days, and you miss one application, you can make an
application within 12 hours from when you should have actually used it,
or speak to your doctor. Don’t wash your face too often, and that, too,
with a mild soap, so that the skin and the acne does not get worse.
The commonly-reported side effects of Renova-Retin A are not severe and
include: mild peeling or redness of the skin, burning or stinging
sensation in the skin, itching, or dry skin. If these symptoms persist
or worsen; or if your face looks puffy or crusted; or if this cream
causes a severe darkening or lightening of the affected areas, then you
should contact your doctor immediately. This cream can be harmful if
swallowed, and can cause an allergic reaction including excessive
peeling or redness of the skin.
The cream/gel is flammable, so it should be stored at ordinary room
temperature away from heat, light or dampness [but not in the freezer],
and kept away from children and pets. Renova 0.02% cream is not
recommended for youngsters below 18, adults above 71, for those with
sun-damaged skin, and should not be used for more than 1 year.
